Sometimes the greatest lessons in leadership come from those who can’t say a word.
For more than 15 years, my family fostered rescue dogs. From high-kill shelters to the streets of Mexico, we welcomed dogs whose futures were anything but certain.
Some were scared.
Some were unsure.
Some just needed someone to give them a chance.
Every single dog we fostered found a forever home.
Well, except Ollie.
Ollie apparently decided our house was a five-star resort with complimentary meals and unlimited belly rubs. He stayed.
But those 15 years taught me something that became central to The Pivot Principle.
It all comes down to three things.
1. POSSIBILITY THINKING
We never looked at a rescue dog and saw what was WRONG with them. We looked at what could be POSSIBLE.
The same goes for people. Sometimes what looks like a limitation is simply potential waiting for the right environment.
2. COLLABORATION & TRUST
You can’t tell a frightened dog, “TRUST ME!” and expect immediate results. Trust is earned through patience, consistency, and understanding. The same is true of leadership. People don’t embrace change simply because you announce it. They embrace it when they feel safe enough to try.
3. TAKING INTENTIONAL RISKS
Every adoption meant another change. Another unknown. Another opportunity. We couldn’t guarantee what the future would hold, but we could help prepare each dog for what came next.
Sometimes, the greatest growth happens when were willing to step into the unfamiliar.
THE BIGGEST LESSON?
We didn’t foster dogs so they’d need us forever. We fostered them so one day, they wouldn’t.
Thats leadership.
Creating opportunities.
Building confidence.
Helping others succeed, even when their next chapter doesnt include you.
And sometimes, the plan changes.
Just ask Ollie.
The greatest transformations don’t always come from changing who we are.
Sometimes they come from changing whats possible around us. That’s how we turn uncertainty into momentum. That’s how we Pivot with Purpose.
Here’s my question for you: Are you creating an environment where the people around you can discover what they’re truly capable of?
